"Close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades..."

... but not babies. Apparently that's a saying. Matt always knows these old man sayings that I've never heard of.

Last Wednesday we had our regular checkup with our midwife. At first she was concerned that I may have toxemia. I had all the symptoms of it, but just slightly. So, she said we'd have to watch that. But, that took a backseat when she did our ultrasound and measured his water content. It was much lower than it's been in the past and her whole demeanor changed. She started to be really attentive and caring when normally she's just down to business and in and out. Anyway, she said that "We may have to get you done." I was freaking out. But, she went and got another doctor for a second opinion. That doctor was concerned too, but thought we could wait until Friday and check again. They told me to drink a lot of water... it might help, it might not.

I was pretty upset that night. I was worried about why he wasn't peeing (which was the explanation of why the water in there with him was so low). I was also upset about having to get induced because I had been preparing myself and getting pumped up to have him naturally. But, Thursday we did all we could to get the house ready and gather all the remaining things that were absolute necessities... and by the end of the night I felt a lot better. Then, Friday morning I was actually excited. I couldn't believe that we may be bringing him home in a couple days. But, even though I was excited, I still didn't really think it was going to happen. I had drunk about 2 gallons of water since Wednesday night and I thought it had to have improved the situation.

At our appointment, things were looking good at first. All my toxemia symptoms had gone down. But, then when she did the ultrasound, she saw that there was no improvement in the water level. She and the other doctor were pretty sure that I should get induced because with that low of water there's a much higher chance of something getting pinched and his oxygen getting obstructed. They were still hesitant, though, to make the final decision because he'd be 3 weeks early. So, they decided to send me to a specialist at McKay Dee. The specialist measured my water again and did a non-stress test where they monitor the baby's heart rate for 20 minutes. He said that although the water was low, he wasn't too concerned because his heart rate was varied (up and down a lot), like they want it to be. So, he said we should wait, but get checked out twice a week to keep a close eye on it.

After being way upset that I'd have to be induced, we were actually kinda disappointed when we found out it wasn't going to happen. We had gotten so pumped! And we felt like we had been on a roller coaster. We were so confused by the opposite reactions to the same conditions by my midwife and the specialist. But, I'm so glad that we didn't take him before he was ready. After we drove home, we went over to our friends' house (the Larsons) to hold their 2 week old baby to make ourselves feel better. And we did.

So, the beat goes on, I guess. We'll keep you posted!
