Oh My Gosh! This is insane! Our little boy came a little unexpectedly. On Monday night I was feeling some back pain. I had been shopping all day and then was ironing, so I thought maybe I had just overdone it. But, then I started noticing that the pains were coming pretty consistently, about every 8 minutes. But, I didn't know if they were contractions because I didn't feel like my belly was any harder than normal. So, I went to bed, but couldn't sleep.

Matt had been asked to stay for another shift at the hospital, so he didn't get off until midnight. But, when he got out, his car lock and door were frozen shut. He tried everything he could to get into it, but just ended up breaking the lock. (Woops!) So, at about 2:30 in the morning, I had to go pick him up! I had noticed that when the pains came I started to feel them in my lower abdomen as well, so I started timing them. By that point, they were coming about every 6 minutes.

I got Matt home, but we had to leave his car, which had the car seat in it, at his work. Matt got a couple hours of sleep while I laid there and timed my pains. By 4:30 am they were about every 4 minutes apart so I decided to call the doctor that my midwife wanted me to use if I happened to go into labor this week while she was out of town. That darn doctor was no help. She wouldn't help me figure out if what I was feeling was labor or not, just told me to go get checked out at the hospital. So, I woke up Matt, crying, saying I didn't know what to do. He thought we should just go. I was upset, too, because we didn't have things ready. But, we got our bags together and left.

We got to McKay Dee at 6:00 am. They checked me out (which was even more painful than the contractions!) and I was dialated to a 3. They called the midwife on call at Circle of Life, Kathy Mark, and decided to keep me there. Not long after they put me in the labor and delivery room, my mom showed up. I didn't even know Matt had called her, so it was such a surprise. I was so glad she was there. She was such a comfort and great support. I wasn't feeling ready for the natural labor I had wanted to get, so I got my epidural about 7:45. Right after that, my water broke. I progressed on my own like that until I got to an 8. Then things slowed down, so they decided to give me some Pitocin. Covey didn't like that so much and we got a little scared when his heart rate got pretty low. But, they gave me oxygen and took me off the Pitocin, and shortly after the pushing started.

This was the hard part. I don't know what I was expecting, but not this. It took me an hour and a half of pushing to get him out. We were beginning to think it wasn't going to work that way. Kathy gave us a 15 minute deadline before she'd have to try something else. He was in the birth canal for so long, you can see he came out with quite the cone head. But, it's gone down a lot already. After we finally got his head out, I think they had some trouble with his shoulders because I heard Kathy tell the nurse to go get some help, but the nurse hesitated and then whatever the problem was, it resolved itself. So, we finally did it. It was such a relief to be done and to see him that I practically went hysterical when they put him on me. I was bawling and Matt and my mom were crying and after a little prodding, Covey started crying. It was such an awesome moment and I'm getting emotional just remembering it. So, 17 hours of labor, an hour and a half of pushing, and 2 days in the hospital and he's finally home.

He is the absolute most precious thing I could've ever imagined. He's nothing like I expected and completely perfect. He's got a ton of dark, thick, long hair and a tiny little mouth and squishy soft cheeks and a tiny little double chin and it's all so perfect and adorable. I love him so much and he really has changed my whole world. He's my miniature little Matt and I love seeing them together (when I can get myself to give Matt a turn with him). Here are the pictures so far(in order of occurrence), but there will be much more to come. Enjoy!

His first babysitter!

I haven't slept since Sunday night, so my mom came over and helped out today so I could take a nap and Matt could get his car to a locksmith. I love how his pants look so nerdy!
