You know those new reward bucks you get in the mail from Smiths now? This is what I decided. We have zero food storage and it's always bugged me. And now that we have a limited food budget and tighter finances, I wasn't sure how I was going to fix this problem. But, those Smiths rewards put 28 extra bucks in our pocket this month. And they come 4 times a year. So, on those months that we get the rewards, I'll use whatever amount we get to purchase food storage. It won't accumulate very quickly, but it's definitely a start.
We talked about what we thought the most important thing to have is and decided it's probably water. I read on the Church's website that you should sanitize 2-liter bottles with a tiny bit of bleach in water and fill those with regular water. We don't buy pop anymore, so if any of you neighbors happen to finish a bottle of pop, sending it our way would be mighty kind.
Next most important would be, what? Protein? Other than peanut butter, what do you store for protein? Beans and tuna are the only other things we can think of. And I'd appreciate any other helpful tips anyone has on food storage. Thanks!

Do you qualify for WIC? I have soooo many beans from being on WIC. We could probably live forever on those. We started asking for food storage stuff for Christmas and sometimes birthdays. I know it is not much fun, but sometime you gotta sacrifice. We also take our extra 2 checks a year and try to buy food storage. If you have any extra when the case lot sale start, get the flour and sugar. And there is always the "buy one extra thing every shopping trip" and that will start your storage. I hate a snails pace, but maybe it works for some. Good luck!
Oh, I always stock up when anything goes on sale for a crazy good deal, like the 10/$10 or even less. That helps a bunch.
You can store wheat and beans FOREVER. I am going to the cannery next week. If you want me to do a couple of cans of either for you, let me know. They're a couple of $ each. The new recommendation is to get a few months worth of things you eat and then start on long lasting things like your wheat and beans.
Hey Julia! Check out my aunt's blog on Food Storage and Prep... she is AMAZING! http://preparedldsfamily.blogspot.com/ Has lots of links, tips and helpful info all in one place. I am trying to do better at this too!! Groceries are so much more expensive out here and there's no such thing as "case lot" sales plus there's not a whole lot of room to store anything but we're getting by. Who needs leg room under the kitchen table right?! Keep me updated on this project and I'll try to do the same ;)
